Anton Ziolkowski is Professor of Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Edinburgh and was appointed in 1992. He co-founded MTEM Limited, a 2004 spinout from the University of Edinburgh, and was MTEM’s Technical Director until 2007, when the company was bought by Petroleum GeoServices (PGS), where he became Chief Scientist, Geoscience and Engineering. He returned to the University from his secondment to MTEM and PGS in March 2010. In his earlier career he was Headquarters Geophysicist to the National Coal Board (1976-1980), consultant to the British National Oil Corporation (1980-1982) and Professor of Applied Geophysics at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands !982-1992. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Nicola is a non-executive director skilled in strategic leadership. She currently contributes as Chair of the Strategy Advisory Board at Heriot-Watt’s Institute of Petroleum and as guest lecturer at Edinburgh University Business School. She was the first woman to get a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University and was with Shell for 36 years. Career highlights included a stint onboard a floating rig drilling appraisal wells, supervising frac jobs offshore UK, a spell running in-house training and development, an assignment managing the UK’s Brent field operations and, in 2007-9, leading the team with responsibility for Norway’s Ormen Lange field and Shell’s UK gas infrastructure, together delivering 1/3 of UK gas supply. She was Managing Director of Shell in Denmark (where Shell was the largest corporate taxpayer in the country) and served as chair of Shell Greenland and as board member for A/S Norske Shell. She served on the boards of the UK and US Chamber of Commerce in Copenhagen. Latterly in her role as VP Continuous Improvement and Cost Leadership, she was credited with introducing the Lean approach to Shell’s global Upstream activity generating over $200 million cost savings in the first year in Gabon, UK and Malaysia. Nicola and her husband live in the Scottish Borders and have three grown-up children.

As External Relationships Director, Stephen is focused on building strong relationships with the Centre’s strategic partners, members and non-member stakeholder communities. Prior to joining the Technology Centre, Stephen held senior business development and marketing positions within the oil and gas sector and latterly was a Director within oil and gas practice of an international executive search firm. He has extensive experience of advising a wide range of oil and gas operators, international service companies, private equity investors focused on energy technologies, higher education institutions and economic development organisations.

Andy joined Wood Mackenzie in 2001 and works in the Sales and Account Management team, focusing on the financial and professional services sector.
Paul Binns
Member, Director

Paul worked for the British Geological Survey’s marine unit in Edinburgh before joining Shell’s Geophysical Research group in The Hague. He subsequently worked in technical and managerial roles in Shell’s operating units in the Middle East and Africa, and in business functions in The Hague. He now teaches externally at the Shell Global Solutions and at Heriot Watt University, as well as undertaking other work. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society and an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society.
David Black

David Black is an independent consultant with 30 years’ experience of advising on upstream commercial, corporate and strategic issues. He spent 19 years in a variety of senior roles with Wood Mackenzie and since then has been Principal Consultant and Owner of Black Oil Consultants.

Nigel Bradburn Search, Director

Nigel Bradburn is Managing Partner of NBS Ltd, an Executive Search firm providing strategic hiring services to a range of operator and service company clients spanning the energy sector. Resident in Aberdeen for the last 15 years, he previously worked for the American oil companies Amerada Hess and Marathon Oil before moving into the Executive Search arena. He has been a member of the Scottish Oil Club for a number of years and joined the Board in 2010.

Patrick Corbett graduated in 1977 with a degree in Geology (Exeter University) followed by a MSc in Micropalaeontology in 1978 (University College London), a postgraduate Diploma in Geological Statistics in 1982 (Kingston University), a PhD in Petroleum Engineering (Geopseudo Upscaling, 1993, Heriot-Watt University) and a DSc “Petroleum Geoengineering” (Heriot-Watt University - July 2006). From 1978, Patrick worked for 11 years in industry in various positions in international exploration and development geoscience for Unocal in the UK, Netherlands and Indonesia. Since coming to Heriot-Watt University in 1989, his research focus has been on the integration of geoscience and engineering through geological analysis, petrophysical measurement and flow modelling. Current research areas include permeability anisotropy modelling, well test interpretation, dynamic upscaling, and genetic petrophysics. He has been closely involved in the Master’s course in Reservoir Evaluation and Management since its inception, a unique course designed to teach the integrated nature of reservoir description and modelling to geologists, petrophysicists, geophysicists, computer scientists and petroleum engineers. He has been involved in research initiatives in the broader Energy field and Sustainability - particularly with respect to the Petroleum Industry and links to Marine Renewables as Head of the Energy Academy at Heriot-Watt University. In January 2012, after many years as the Total Professor, he took up a Visiting Professorship at UFRJ in Rio as the BG Group Professor of Carbonate Petroleum Geoengineering. He is a member of AAPG, EAGE, SEG, PESGB, SCA, SPE, SPWLA, a Fellow of the Geological Society, a Chartered Geologist and a Chartered Scientist. He is an Associate Editor of First Break. He has published more than 70 reviewed journal papers, and is a co-author of books entitled “Statistics for Petroleum Engineers and Geoscientists” and “Cores from the Northwest European Hydrocarbon Province”. Patrick was an EAGE Distinguished Lecturer (Petroleum Geoengineering) for 1998 and an SPE Distinguished Lecturer (Integration of Geology and Well Testing) for 1998-9. He was SCA VP Arrangements for 2001. From 2003- 2009 he was Head of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering and from 2009-12 Head of the Energy Academy. He was Sub-Dean of Heriot-Watt University from 2002-5. In 2005, he was awarded the Wegener Medal by the EAGE for the integration of geoscience and geoengineering. He was SPE EUROPEC Chairman for Madrid 2005. Patrick was awarded the 2006 SPE Europe and Russia Regional Technical Award for Distinguished Contribution to Petroleum Engineering in the Area of Reservoir Description and Dynamics. This award recognised his “..long years of dedicated service to the industry, singular devotion of time and effort to the programme and development of your section and region, and our Society”. He was the 2009 SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor delivering a one-day course in Petroleum Geoengineering in 26 international locations. In 2010, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. From January 2012- January 2014 Patrick was BG Group Visiting Professor at Unversidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro developing research activities in carbonate reservoirs. On returning to Edinburgh he retains the BG Chair to build capacity in Brazil and further links between Brazil and HWU. In Edinburgh, he co-cordinates HWU’s Brazil Strategy Group and is a member of the University Court.

Gneiss Energy, Director

Jon is an energy sector advisor who provides strategic guidance and transaction origination and project management support to executive and board-level managers internationally, across the oil and gas industry.Jon is a qualified corporate lawyer, petroleum economist and investment banker. He began his career in 1994 as a research associate at the internationally renowned Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy at the University of Dundee. Recruited to Arthur Andersen, Jon continued to expand his expertise in the sector, advising on upstream/downstream and services transactions. In late 2000, Jon joined Brewin Dolphin Investment Banking (now N+1 Singer) where he went on to lead both its Energy & Natural Resources and TMT businesses. From 2008 to 2014 he held senior posts at Cenkos Securities plc, including Head of Corporate Finance, Energy and Natural Resources. More recently, at Macquarie Capital, he was Senior Managing Director and Head of Natural Resources for Europe, Middle East and Africa, and also Co-Head of Equity Capital Markets, Europe. In his current role with advisory boutique Gneiss Energy, Jon draws on his wealth of experience to provide insight and advice for board and senior-level management executives across the sector. As the industry continues to evolve, Jon strives not only to offer advice that reflects current commercial and legal frameworks, but also to provide analysis and comment that will pave the way for possible future developments. He is a regular public speaker and has published papers and articles on a range of topics, including the deregulation of European energy markets, UK energy infrastructure, tariffs and TPA as well as analysis and commentary on UKCS decommissioning regime and its challenges. Jon is an active member of various professional bodies and institutions, including the Law Society of Scotland, the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators, the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales, the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments, the Worshipful Company of International Bankers, and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain. He has sat on the Board of The Scottish Oil Club since 2008 and was President from 2013-15.

ThinkTank Maths Limited, Director

Angela Mathis is Chief Executive and co-founder of Edinburgh-based ThinkTank Maths Limited, a pioneering mathematical research company providing paradigm-shifting mathematics-based solutions to key industrial sectors (oil and gas, energy, space, defence and financial services) leveraging high-level core skills in mathematics and related sciences. Angela is an elected Council member of ADS Scotland and UK, the UK trade body for Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space, representing the Scottish membership. She is on the Regional Advisory Board for Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian Region, a member of the Innovation Scotland Forum and a Board member since 2006 of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise (SIE). Mrs. Mathis’ professional history lies in international technology commercialisation. For 12 years she was at Imperial Chemical Industries ( I.C.I.), Nobel’s Explosives in Ayrshire and commercialised innovative CFC-free chemical solutions with the successful brand Waterlily Comfort Cushioning, whilst at I.C.I. Polyurethanes, Everberg, Belgium. In 1998 she launched the Iomega Zip drive across Continental Europe driving sales to $600 million in 2 years and led PSINet Europe’s internet and data-warehousing commercial activity. She is a Global Scot, having lived and worked in Paris, Brussels, Geneva and Freiberg, Germany for over 20 years. Angela joined the board of the Scottish Oil Club in 2015.
Tom Morris
Member, Director

Tom has 25 years experience working in complex political and cultural environments for Shell E&P, and most recently Cairn Energy. He has a strong technical basis, complemented with broad and in-depth commercial expertise. He is an accomplished facilitator and negotiator. He recently led the country entry for Cairn into Senegal including responsibility for: government and joint venture relations, permitting, offshore operations and the in-country office. He was Non Executive Director for a technology spin out company from Heriot Watt University. He is former President of the Scottish Oil Club. In early 2016 Tom left Cairn to set up an advisory firm, Bouvet Solutions, providing independent perspectives to government and industry.
Gabriel Mynheer

Gabriel graduated from the University of Durham with a BSc. in Geosciences. He then went on to complete an MSc in Environmental Management with a focus on the extractive industries. Having spent some time working with Heritage Oil, Gabriel joined Wood Mackenzie in 2013. He spent three years covering Central Asia and the Caucasus before moving to the North West and Central Europe team. During his time at Wood Mackenzie, Gabriel was a great supporter of the Scottish Oil Club. In Early 2017 he helped to establish the Society’s events in London. More recently Gabriel joined Nexen Petroleum (a CNOOC Ltd. company) as an Analyst in the Strategy, Planning and Economics team. In 2017/2018 Gabriel will also Chair a Panel of “Next Generation” Oil and Gas professionals that will see a new conference/workshop established. This will be part of the Appex Oil and Gas Conference but will be focused on the “next generation” of Oil and Gas deal makers.
John Naismith

John has more than 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry gained with Shell, Enterprise Oil, Canadian Natural Resources, Melrose and most recently at Petroceltic, where he was Head of Technical, advising on operations and developments in Middle East North Africa, Europe and North America. His experience includes reservoir engineering, integrated subsurface studies, asset management, commercial and operations. John left Petroceltic in 2016 to form Blackford Energy where he provides technical and managerial consultancy services to the oil and gas sector, and the wider energy industry. He joined the Board of the Scottish Oil Club in 2010.

Nathan is an E&P equity research analyst at RBC Capital Markets (#1/#2 rated analyst, 2012-16 Extel Surveys). He is focused on UK and Toronto Listed Intl E&P companies especially those active in Asia, Latin America and the North Sea. He has a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Geology from St Andrews University, an MSc in Petroleum Geology from the Royal Holloway College, University of London. He is Fellow of the Geological Society, Director of The Scottish Oil Club and a Member of The Company of Merchants of Edinburgh.

Craig is a chartered accountant, currently working with PwC's Oil & Gas team. After graduating with first class honours in Applied Mathematics from the University of St Andrews, he qualified as a CA with KPMG. Then, after 8 years working in the electronics industry, Craig moved to Bank of Scotland where he spent 2 years in Finance followed by 6 in the Oil & Gas team. Craig is married to Kathryn and lives in Edinburgh.
Les Thomas

Les is currently Chief Executive Officer of Ithaca Energy Inc, a North Sea focused oil and gas operating company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: IAE) and the London Stock Exchange AIM (LSE AIM: IAE). Les took up the post as CEO of Ithaca in October 2013, having worked in the industry for over 30 years in a variety of roles. Les spent 22 years with Marathon Oil Corporation in various locations in subsurface, engineering, operational and senior management positions, becoming the European Business Unit Leader, responsible for Marathon’s upstream business in the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Norway. Les left Marathon in 2004 to join the Board of John Wood Group PLC as Chief Executive of the Wood Group Production Facilities business and as the Group Director responsible for HSE. He led the Wood Group Production Facilities business through organic growth and acquisitions to become a $2 billion+ turnover business operating in 25+ countries. Les joined the Board of the Scottish Oil Club in 2012.

Stephen primarily focuses on the upstream oil and gas and ICT industries. He has extensive equity capital markets, mergers & acquisitions and private equity experience and advises both funders and corporates. Recent work includes acting for a number of independent E&P companies across a range of matters, including capital raisings, portfolio rationalisations and takeover transactions. He is recognised as a leading practitioner in Chambers, which describes him as "a talented, hard and fast worker with terrific public company expertise".
