SynopsisNick will give an overview of research into CO2 emissions reduction, including underground CO2 storage beneath the North Sea, the use of CO2 in Enhanced Oil Recovery, and the outlook for oil producers and consumers in the new age of carbon trading, climate change and the acidification of the oceans. [top] Nick Riley began his career as a biostratigrapher and has worked extensively on UK geology with an emphasis on UK coalfields and the reservoirs of the North Sea. A few years ago he was appointed to lead a new BGS research programme tackling the problems of sustainable energy. This covers the development of alternative energies, solving the disposal of nuclear waste and mitigating the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment. He was awarded an MBE for services to environmental geoscience in 2003. [top] ArrangementsMembers and guests are invited to convene and register between 17.30 and 18.30 in the Conference Room for coffee/tea and biscuits. A pay bar is available. Nick’s presentation will commence at 18.30 and last for about 1 hour. There will be an opportunity, both before and after the presentation, to view display boards describing oil related work of the British Geological Survey. A Discussion Dinner will follow the meeting commencing at about 20.15, cost £25.00 inclusive of wine and VAT. This will be a buffet menu with vegetarian options.
