Synopsis

Dave will be speaking about tsunamis, their causes and threat, particularly focusing on the catastrophic event that devastated the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day, 2004. The threat to the UK is also briefly explored and whether our safety is more apparent than real.

Speaker

Dave has worked for the British Geological Survey for over 30 years, mainly in the fields of marine and hydrocarbon geology both in the UK and overseas.  He has been researching tsunamis since 1998 when he led the marine surveys into the cause of the 17th July tsunami in Papua New Guinea that claimed the lives of over 2,000 people. Since this time Dave has been working on tsunamis in Turkey, Hawaii and Bermuda, most recently taking part in two marine surveys investigating the cause of the Indian Ocean event of 2004.

Arrangements

Members and guests are invited to convene between 18:00 and 18.30 in the Conference Room for coffee/tea and biscuits. A pay bar is available. The presentation will commence at 18.30 and last for about 1 hour.  A Discussion Buffet Dinner (hot and cold buffet menu with vegetarian options) will follow the meeting commencing at about 20:15.  The cost is £26 inclusive of wine and VAT.

During the evening (available from about 5:30 onwards) are BGS geological displays, samples, and other interesting memorabilia for viewing.

There will be an opportunity, both before and after the presentation, to view display boards describing oil related work of the British Geological Survey.
