Synopsis

‘Capturing the Energy’ is an initiative designed to co-ordinate the creation of an archive of the UK offshore oil and gas industry, ensuring that important historical records are preserved for future generations. In this way, it hopes to encourage wider recognition and understanding of the huge importance of the industry to the UK.

The idea evolved from a scheme to ensure the survival of records relating to the Frigg gas field, and from highly successful documentation schemes already under way in Norway. It was initially jointly proposed by the Royal commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) and the Business Archives Council of Scotland (BACS), but took off thanks to generous support from TOTAL E&P UK PLC, Scottish Enterprise Grampian, the University of Aberdeen and UKOOA.

Jim Rae will provide an insight into the social, economic and cultural impact of the oil and gas industry, set in the context of personal experience and a career tracking the sector from its fledgling roots to a key international asset and national revenue contributor. Commencing in ‘pre-oil’ student days in Aberdeen (and Shetland), a journey passing through milestones, events, physical developments and changes that have touched all our lives and altered our prospects and perceptions. This overview, delivered from the perspective of ‘living history’ with unashamed nostalgia and visual references, is intended to evoke audience interest in preserving and recording the story of the extraction of this significant UK natural resource. An introduction to the ‘Capturing the Energy’ Project and its aims.

Speaker

Miles Oglethorpe manages the Architecture and Industry programmes within the Survey & Recording division of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS). Much of his work in recent years has involved the recording of historic industries in Scotland, and in particular, a variety of energy-related industries such as high explosives (ICI), nuclear and hydro-electricity, and coal mining. Latterly, he has been involved with the genesis of the ‘Capturing the Energy’ initiative, which aims to ensure the creation of a sustainable central archive of the UK offshore oil and gas industries as they evolve in the coming decades. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Business Archives Council of Scotland, and of the English Heritage Industrial Archaeology Panel. He is also the British National Representative on The International Committee on the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage, and has edited, authored and co-authored a number of books and papers relating to industrial heritage. The latest is a book on the modern Scottish coal industry.

In a career spanning over 30 years in the international oil and gas sector, Jim Rae has been an advisor and senior manager on development projects, asset operations and late-life solutions for operators; engineering, drilling and marine contractors; plus, specialist manufacturers. Has also performed strategic roles within development agencies, sectoral task forces and higher education. In his current role as a regulatory compliance, reputation and issues management consultant, has delivered high-profile projects and advised operators and companies on a range of sensitive topics (specialising in facilitating decommissioning activities in recent years). A professional business writer/technical editor, he is also a long-serving member of Aberdeen Maritime Museum’s Oil Panel and a founder member of the ‘Capturing the Energy’ oil industry archive project.
