Synopsis

CSR activity (or social performance) in the oil and gas sector is nothing new. What is new is the ever increasing pressure from NOCs, IOCs, Govts, NGOs and others, to deliver more tangible and sustainable benefits to local people, including businesses.

How can this be achieved? Could it lead to the illusive win-win scenario of facilitating the economic development of local and national communities as well as assisting energy firms develop their profitable businesses?

Speaker

Hamish Dingwall worked in the service and supply sector in Scotland for 9 years before joining Scottish Enterprise's Energy Directorate in 1990. He became Director of Energy in 1996, before joining the International Finance Corporation (IFC – the private sector bank of the World Bank Group) in 2001, based in Washington D.C.  He was responsible for researching, designing, delivering and measuring local economic development programmes alongside IFC's major global investments in the oil, gas and mining sectors. These investments were in developing countries, often in very remote locations.

Since 2004 he has worked as an independent adviser on sustainable enterprise and economic development for clients in the extractive sectors in developing countries.
